Read fields and picklist values
Fields describe a record. Some hold free text, while a picklist holds one value from a defined set.
Lead Status describes the current qualification step. Read the saved value first; you do not need Edit to inspect a record.

A simple example
A lead can have Status New while its Owner is Sam Rivera. Those fields answer different questions.
A common mistakeThe colored path and Details refer to the same saved status; ownership does not determine status.
